grunger again

Re that Tesco link - I thought it would show my blank search for Puffed Wheat, but you can still type Puffed Wheat into the search box yourself.

At Grunger’s request, I called at the market café today, hoping for a light lunch. I was disappointed to find that the “soup of the day” was parsnip, my least favourite vegetable, but Cassie surprised me.
“We keep a few cans of vegetable soup for emergencies. You can have one of those.”
“That’s very kind of you, but I only want half-a-can, as the world’s leading supplier recommends. You can keep the other half in the fridge for 2 days” I replied.
“I assume you’re joking. Anything else?
“Just a breadstick, please.”
“You’ll get a bread roll like everyone else” she snarled.
When the soup arrived, it was certainly a canful, but it got me thinking. Does anybody really use half-a-can of soup and put the remainder in the fridge?

Jigjag, glad to hear the market cafe and Cassie are still going strong. I personally have never used only half a can of soup and put the rest in the fridge. My in-laws would have - and did - as they seemed to regard all such information, instructions, to be followed to the letter. Oh, and they were nowhere near as greedy as Iam!

PS I chuckle sometimes at the 'bread roll' to accompany soup. If the menu or the waiter or waitress said 'soup came with a roll', would any customers ever expect a sausage roll or a spring roll to be dished up?

Roll does have another meaning. The other customer might have to divert their eyes.

Thanks. My mother was similar to your in-laws. She would do odd things e.g. only put half a packet of tea into the caddy. "That way, you will never run out" she would say.

I have never thought about it, but, yes, in "soup and a bread roll", the bread does seem superfluous.

I am sorry that Cassie was rather impatient when you requested a healthy breadstick. I think I can see your mother's logic, but she would still have to remember to buy more tea.

My grandma used to cover the carpets with rugs - presumably the idea was to preserve the carpets and replace the rugs when they wore out! Sadly we never got to see the actual carpets.

If Cassie does breakfasts I bet Puffed Wheat is not an option. In fact I think it's rare for any cafe to provide breakfast cereal. Nor have I ever seen Puffed Wheat at a hotel or B&B.
Don't people like eating cardboard?🤣

Husband and I used to go to a cafe for breakfast. It advertised 6 items of the usual English breakfast fare such as sausage, bacon, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast… for something like £6 for six items. One time, we each asked for 2 slices of toast with 4 tomatoes. The girl refused to serve us as “That’s not a breakfast, is it?”

We never went again. The breakfast we asked for would probably have cost them about 50p.
