Cloverjo, what a strange experience! I could see the waitress refusing to let you have three portions of bacon and three sausages, as that would be unfair cost-wise. Your breakfast plan sounded pretty thrifty, cheap - she should have been glad!

I dont suppose they do Puffed Wheat or any other cereal, but a local restaurant does porridge - not eaten there.

Sorry about your carpets. My father used to discourage me from wearing new clothes in case they got dirty, torn etc.

Yes, how ridiculous and typical of a lot of cafes I have been in. Not in my market cafe though. There would have been some grumbling and discussion about whether 2 slices of toast is 1 or 2 items, but you would have got your breakfast, probably at half- price.

Interesting to hear Cleverjo's experience, so it is not just us (we?) who have had problems with multi-item breakfasts. Very poor customer service when you are downgrading to cheaper items. And they lost 2 customers who were trying to increase the cafe's profits.

I wonder if the waitress asked the manager/owner/chef about your request, or did she decide herself? She has not right to tell you what is or is not breakfast.

Sorry to be pedantic, but is it that the porridge is not eaten there, or is it that YOU have not eaten (porridge or anything else) there?

Apologies for the sloppy and ambiguous English. I have never eaten in the restaurant, though I have seen the menu, and I should be pleased to confirm that that is that which I meant.

I am afraid that I have no idea if the porridge is eaten there. I assume that it is, but I suppose it could be a take-away item. The idea has not yet caught on in Wigan, it is all pies, chips and Indians.

We have three prisons in my area - plenty of porridge being served there!

I have never experienced that sort of porridge, nor much of the so-called edible sort.

I have cereal one day and porridge the next ... plus one traditional English cooked breakfast per week.

I've just renewed my YCCC Membership - this will be my 50th consecutive season! Looking forward to the 2026 fixtures being released - then we can enjoy giving Australia a good thrashing down under (I wish!)

Here's another solecism, from the BBC, of all places!

This is seismic. To lose both the director general and the CEO of BBC News at the same time is unprecedented. It's an extraordinary moment in the history of the BBC.

It can't be underestimated.

She means "overestimated", of course. Why do people nearly always get this wrong?
