The birds can be nasty and are a pest. I witnessed someone throw a banana skin at one - it swallowed it in one gulp!

Recent postings reminded me of a conversation I had with Pat Batt, opening batsman for our ladies team, towards the end of last season.

You may remember that Pat had been promoted to battering fish at the chip shop where she worked. She told me that the new job was going well, so I asked her:
“Is your batterership as good as your batsmanship?”
“You can’t use that word, the MCC think it is insulting to women. You have to say battership” she replied.
“But that is insulting to Bradman, Sobers and all other great batsmen” I said.
“I know. That’s why the girls call it battleship, at least it is a proper word.”
I suppose it is a battle nowadays trying to speak English.

Sadly a local chap died after an altercation outside a fish n chip shop ... a police spokesperson said he may have been battered.

Sorry to hear that. A salt and battery is quite common these days both outside and inside chip shops. I prefer vinegar.

Thanks jigjag, well said.

We have never played your ladies team, but I would love to meet Pat Batt, clearly a star at batting and battering.

I feel that the service in chip shops is getting worse. On my last visit, I ordered, and was asked “Sore feeger?”

I was surprised, but replied “Yes, I hit it with a hammer”

“No, sore veeger”

“Ah, thank you. On my chips, but not on the pie and peas, please.”

I just get a quick shake. 90% of chips get no condiments. My chippy has started to charge £1 for ketchup. Some people pay it - not me.
