Thanks mattrom for the wonderful parsing of the word. I had this word initially but didn't pursue as I could not parse it.

I'd welcome some hints to this one:

Dormant base location, largely abandoned environs (9)

I'm thinking "base" is E. Other possible fodder could include SIT[e] ("location largely"), LY ("largely abandoned"), or ES ("abandoned environs").

My guess is:

definition "Dormant"

"environs" is a containment indicator

"abandoned" (4 letters) contains ["base" (1), "location largely" (4 = "location" with final letter removed)]

Apologies for obscurity. Trying to avoid spoiler.

That looks right to me, Geeker. Not easy though.

The ClueClinic lists ‘environs’ as an advanced container indicator.

Thanks, jono.
That was a difficult clue and I'd never seen "environs" as a containment indicator.
To be honest, I initially drew a blank. But then I looked up synonyms of "dormant" and the first 9-letter hit was a clear fit.

Geeker, well done - but it's a pretty clunky, inelegant clue, I feel!

Yes, it's clunky and I doubt that many crossword editors would approve.
But most of my Clueless/PR/WPR entries are 💩, so I seldom cast aspersions in that department. 😂
