First part of preamble mentions group of six (as per title) - so if you google six with the relevent term all should be apparant....

Many thanks monkjunk. I forgot that some entries were measured upwards. I have completed the grid and identified the names and as one who struggles am delighted to finish (Go to the bottom of the class. Sir, I am at the bottom of the class. Well go to the top but remember you are a lap behind (Will Hay)). What an excellent puzzle.

I still cannot parse the 7 down Archie Moore clue. As far as the 7 misprints are they using a US spelling? The ones I have bizarrely form an anagram of an African singer and dancer and this led me up a real blind alley.

However many thanks to the setter and all those who helped - off to catch herrings

re 7 Down: Just put I (1) between a three letter word for "vintage" ( think whites and reds ) and a three letter abbreviation for serial.

The seven misprints form a standard, singular, and tasty English word.

7d is 3 letters for vintage and three for serial with an I in the middle. Definition is the first two words with a letter changed. Then it is jumbled for entry.
The spelling of the 7 letter word is English and relates directly to the types.

Just a note to add my 2p - I thought this was a lovely puzzle. Very tough with so much going on but this was compensated for by (mostly) straightforward cluing. Once enough clues were cold solved I was able to take a stab at filling in the grid and progressed steadily from there, helped somewhat by word lengths. PDM didn't come until the very end when I figured out the misprints, which was embarrassing as I have a degree or two in the subject! I'm very much looking forward to the next puzzle from Hedge-sparrow.

I really enjoyed this puzzle although got very hung up on 14ac, being convinced that there would be a 'deb' involved somewhere!

To my astonishment and delight, I have also satisfied myself as to the parsing of each answer - except for 6d, which I take to be the second half of 29ac, 'to a deserted paddock, as Highlanders might have it'. I suppose I am ignorant of a Scottish word. Could anyone explain it to me please?

I think that I have the answer to 39 (two words 5&6). The definition of US State Department makes some sense as does the first word of the answer (confused) but I do not have the foggiest about the second word of the answer. How is that "financial resources"?

Anyway must go and spend the remains of my pocket money on Collins English Dictionary, The Oxford Dictionary of English and the OED.
