For 24 I had “elbow” which, as it happens, is a type of chair and a kind of turning. Slowed me down a bit !

Oh dear - struggling as usual on a very wet sandbank.
I don't wan't too much to be given away but can I point to my difficulty in the SW corner.
I have solved 22 down and entered in the straightforward way; i've guessed that 3 down is the instrument from 2 down but entered in a different direction. 27 down is an anagram. If this is all correct can someone offer me help with 26 across - nothing seems to fit.
Also could someone tell me where the second half of 27 goes?

I'll have another bash but am nowhere nearer finding the theme. Back to ball juggling but thanks anyway.

Hi Williamseal,

Yes to 3d being the instrument from 2 and yes to the direction.

26a anagram of "ooze" + S(ociety) around a 3 letter word for "eye" (as in pheasant brood)

27 second half goes in 34.

I haven't fully parsed 27d.

PS - 26 definition is "oily organic compounds".

Brendan. Re 27 dn, Opening letter of first word plus Scottish word for entrance gives Aussie wild dog. Entered as as anagram.

Help! I'm doing okay on the clue side of things, but am struggling to fully understand the instructions and it's stopping me from entering any answers into the grid. Am I right in thinking that for the first two sets, the 'first half of the clue' answers are all just filled in normally - and then the 'second half of the clue' answers are filled in with some kind of twist? So, can I just go ahead and write in my answers to 1A, 13A, etc, with full confidence?

If so, I reckon I might be able to handle the rest of this one...
