I've just stumbled across the finish line though the theme is well beyond my ken!

The grid fill is not too bad once you get a few entered and a lucky guess at the link between a pretty obvious word that appears in the grid with the word generated by the third group, gave me the 'in' I needed for wiki to do the rest! Very clever - almost too clever for this bear of little brain.

I've also just crept across the line. It makes a change, and I'm always grateful for the comments and help on this forum. I wonder if there was a deliberate decision to publish this puzzle after last week's given the etymological link?

Thoroughly enjoyed this and, as others have noted, not quite as fearsome as it first appeared.

The only hurdle I've yet to overcome is what the corrections to the misprints are meant to spell. I can only manage to rearrange the letters I've got in one way (7452163), but that's "an astragal moulding" according to Chambers, so I reckon I've gone wrong somewhere and must've parsed something incorrectly. Any assistance much appreciated!

Hi askival,

You have the wrong letter for the correction in 8dn. You need to change the word that defines the second answer, and the correct letter is not S, as I think you have it.

This puzzle looked more daunting than it turned out to be, with some initial solving but the answers to Set 3 providing some help in placing the second answers.

I meant “some initial cold solving”. This week took a little longer than last week’s puzzle but much less than the “Disco Lovers” and “Selfie” puzzles of recent weeks.

Yes, planks, I do mean 9dn. Slip of the finger on my keyboard. 8dn is of course in Set 2, not Set 3.

Ah yes, I made a mental note of that clue being somewhat tenuous but never followed it up. Many thanks, wintonian.

Leaving aside the merits of the puzzle, is it not a bit ridiculous to expect solvers to need four dictionaries? I understand the constraint created by one set of answers needing to have real word anagrams, but it was still a step too far in my book
