I agree. The high standard of English shown by foreign players and managers amazes me. In a recent interview, the "hard man" of Italian football, Chiellini, spoke superb English, and he has only ever lived in Italy.

Jigjag, Pedants United likes to be seen to keep up with the times. We're not a bunch of old fuddy-duddies locked in the past. Our trophy will be another, equally absurd Emirates FA Cup.

Thanks, Brendan. My eyes usually glaze over at any mention of football, but I found the comments about the language skills interesting.

Jigjag is right. It's a sad state of affairs when the overseas coaches and players have better grammar than many of the English ones.

Yes it is surprising how long these things take, polishing and perfecting them! I did not notice it earlier as I was at the market. That is something else that might take some time.

Jigjag, was there a surfeit of anything - particularly apostrophes - at the market?

For the Emirates thing, I thought it'd just be a matter of putting together a string of adjectives - but that didn't work and I had to start over. Still, I had nothing to moan about - nothing leapt out at me from the paper, I didn't hear anyone talking nonsense on tv.

Not apostrophes, but a lot of moaning about "stupid made-up words" from Ivan. I can do a short report if you like.
