Jigjag and Grunger

My Scottish 'shore' is 'sh- oar', my Scottish 'sure' is more 'Shoo-'r than Shoo-er.

I don't mind being at sea - if it's in comfort! I like ferries and proper-sized ships/boats, none of your rowing boats, or things with sails (and mainbraces, maybe, whatever those are).

Grunger, well done on your rowing 'promotion'.

I think Yorkshire people are all `Shoo-ers` ... possibly a result of centuries of sheep herding!

"Praise the sea; on shore remain."
John Florio (1553-1625)

Certainly excellent advice then

One of the clues on this week's Clueless reminded me of the unfortunate Frenchman who fell into the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

"I will drown, and no-one shall save me" he cried.

So, of course, no-one did!

Thanks, Tyke, Rosalind and ChrisE.

I've been too busy trying to ignore Christmas to keep an eye on apostrophes, grammar, clunky sentences etc.

From today's Daily Telegraph cryptic:

Iron brace fixed without carbon, like a hang-glider must be (7)

I don't like "like" used as a conjunction, although it's very common these days and I see it often in The Times. "As" would correct.

I heard a review of your book on the radio this morning - "Tales from the Seven Seas". I thought it would be a swashbuckling adventure about cocky coxswains and boozy bosuns pursuing pursers around flipping fo'c's'les. But apparently it was;
