14d - I think "in this way" is letters 6 and 7, last letter is "beginning to drop" and the remaining 6 are the 9

14d - agree with prospero but I still don't see a definition for the solution. Other undefined solutions are all 9's - eg 17, 27, 28. Can anyone elucidate?

Thanks prospero. As in - if 14 is 14 (by the last letter) then it means "drop" ?7

I just thought the whole clue gave you the definition ... it could work your way but it seems over-elaborate and would really need to read "drop beginning to drop to get drop" ... which doesn't give the wordplay

trevor - 12 is anag of encased + 9

24 and 30 are the last two I've got left. I know the solutions, but no idea why. Any help from anyone appreciated.

And I still don't see how "In this way beginning to drop" is a satisfactory definition for 14...

Sorry, I am a latecomer to this party but looking forward to gatecrashing! I forgot it and only downloaded this morning and have spent all day, on and off and on, wrangling with it.
I am not enjoying it (too many possibles to be sure of an answer), so much of it only pencilled in.
24d I have a food supplement but can't see a 9.
30a - haven't a clue.
Trevor, my parse on 23a is a 9 inside (pi)n on + possessive ending.
