Are you sure that the first four letters of 24 aren't a raising of someone in a phrase, plus 1 (for a) plus the 9. Or this that the same as someone else has said?

Pendragon - Trevor at 16.29 suggests that but with letters 5 and 6 as the 9. And I'm most grateful, Trevor, and can now rest in peace. As for the right+dead theory on 14, it's ingenious but if correct you wouldn't be beginning to drop .... My version is (sid48) that if you're "in this way" (ie 14) you'll be beginning to drop - thus the whole clue is the definition and the two parts the wordplay.

One last query and that's it. I'm not sure I'll stay around to help others, as I have no confidence in what I've done anyway! Is the answer to 28D the "resist" or the opposite? I would go for the latter as it's a 9.

I read 14 as dead + right but I think your explanation is better prospero.

As for 28, the answer is a 9.

You wouldn't be 'beginning to drop' but you would be D (the beginning to drop). My quibble with other way is splitting the 9.
oh-well, at least we are all agreed on the answer. i found it pretty tough overall.
thanks for all the help.

Yes, I take the point about splitting the 9 ... and being D does make a lot of sense. I do feel more confident about the correctness of answers now.

I think 23 is explained above - setter's possessive at the end, end of pin + on at the beginning, three-letter 9 in the middle

It is a bit confusing when some of the answers are just 9s and the 9s are not inserted into the answer.
