I think I finally have it, and have put the six words in order in the NE corner. However, I am troubled by the derived word. Is it something like BRAYR?

Pendragon.
This is the word not given explicitly in Chambers. You have the correct crossers. Look at the "clue" for this entry. Think of what entity does what the clue says, and then an onomatapoeic version of that.

almost there (I think) - having spent 2 days blogging Maskarade's latest.
It's just that the first down clue (2nd round) is such a peculiar word I can't see a synonym, unless one uses a homonym for it, I have C?O?E - is that right?

Hi Prospero, the word you need relies on the second definition of the clue word in Chambers. Actually a very common word. Your crossers are correct.

I shall look forward to the Maskarade blog!

thanks jono - relieved I wasn't blogging this! The only Genius of 274 I've ever taken more than a day over ... I do think this has been a tenuous, almost dodgy set-up and only luck, without this forum, could solve it, Having said that, many people got there before me, so chapeau to them ...
