Re "Cleans round" I am splitting it as 5, 1 (not as 4, 2 as prospero indicated) and found a spot for 5...

I still have these two to go:
- Leave wife
- Two thirds

Scratch " Leave wife".. ..

I had the answer but could not enter because of another incorrct entry. Fixed it.

Oof! That was tough. I very nearly posted on here to ask about the ‘fragmented downward note’ but as often happens, whilst typing out my query that particular penny dropped, and that somehow opened up the endgame for me. Bravo to KGB, a magnificent construction.

I have the "Cleans...." split 3,3 as the there's 3 squares unused marked as f in the grid.

Yep, a real challenge, my pdm came by looking at the grid construction to see the literal 'fragmented downward note' and then the listed items that make up the round 2 entries

Am confused, where does the first three go?

Clearly, the middle one is spokem for.

The top one is part of instructon, I think.

I still don't have "Two thirds of staff".

ilippu, if you look at 2 down clues in the top half of the grid, you'll see that they contain the 1st and 3rd letters of the "cleans..." clue and the 2nd space is unchecked.

Remember, many of us have a completely empty NE

3 letter "staff" minus last letter 'two thirds' + "wait minus "island"

Phew, quite a struggle, but made it in the end. A puzzle within a puzzle, as it were. As expected from Karla (?) a tortuous road, and some clever misleads.
