BTW Cagey/KGB, that was good fun. Thank you, (if you look in on this forum). It was tough, but we like them chewy, or we wouldn't be here.

And the derived form is more than forgiven. I can hear little agent nouns across the field right now doing exactly what they were born to do. The joys of Spring....

hi muraria

I see the headers, and the remaining three rows below. I am not sure how to read the 'clues' ...each row contains one of each type?

Are they grid entries or they have to be solved?

Note the the round 2 clues are in order per the preamble. They need to be solved.

This particular cherry took 7 or 8 bites, never mind the traditional 2. Couldn't make head nor tail of the SIs so just solved what I could cold (quite a few very friendly ways in, I thought) and the fog gradually began to clear. Of the 7 words in the "uncovered instructions" I sorted out the first three OK and had the endgame grid constructed without too much fuss, but my goodness it took me an age to figure out what was going on with words 4-7 and the "fragmented downward note"! Even then I proved to myself (not for the first time) how rubbish I am at Quick Crosswords, before finally limping over the finish line.

Bravo, KGB - very nicely done.

Thanks buddy.

That's what i was afraid of.

Like mitz, i struggle with quiptics and, here, we have a word sudoku, with nothing pre-filled.

Btw, I have the most obvious answer for:

"Bills's got it backwards..." unparsed, though the crossers fit.

Look up your answer, reversed, in Chambers

@ilippu

It's not so much simple cryptics or quiptics that I struggle with, it's actual quick crosswords, just straightforward "here's a word, find a synonym" jobs. I need the guardrails of the cryptic element! So Round 2 took me far too long, even with the helpfully provided LEAKY REASONS.

"Bill's got it backwards..." was my last to be parsed too.
