I got there in the end, or at least I think I did.
All twelve letters in 'leaky reasons' have been accounted for in the unchecked entries for Round 2.
Am I correct in saying that three squares in the grid are left empty; they serve to isolate the NE corner - the entries for Round 2 - from the answers for Round 1?

I think the 3 letters to which you refer are those that are meant to be treated as per the first 3 words of the instruction (a,b,c)

Of course - the penny has just dropped! I've followed the instructions in a, b and c, and I can now sleep more easily tonight. Thank you, brendan.

I think there's a great many of us on here, myself included, that only managed to complete all the parts to this puzzle because of the amazing help offered by the wonderful people of this Forum.
