KGB returns. Thanks.

Haven't deciphered SI. Long struggle ahead.

Here's an interactive grid for those who prefer. Let me know if there are any problems, the customised numbering/lettering was a little difficult achieve, though I think its ok.

No doubt light will soon be shed by mightier brains than mine on the a-g lights and why 34ish clues are provided for 41 lights.

The first three across clues are easy to solve, but where are the answers to be entered in Round 1 given the non-matching letter counts and light sizes?

For Genius puzzlers I suspect April is the cruellest month.

Is this really worth all the effort at completing the grid, especially as the clues are not that easy anyway? I have often felt this way, but have persevered (with a little help from this site) and have finally finished the crossword, usually within the day of publication ... but there seem far too many variables this time. Maybe next month?

Hi Pendragon, You may have a point! I think I've completed Round 1, which has left me with an empty north east corner; a baffling special instruction; 13 unchecked letters to be filled with an anagram of the 12 in LEAKY REASONS; and a headache. And I can't for the life of me see the fragmented downward note. Does it really matter if I'm supposed to disregard it? Clearly I'm missing something big...

I've been checking in, on and off, all day hoping for the regular boffins to turn up and shed a flash of light on things. Nothing but tumbleweeds in the thread today - maybe unfortunate timing...
