OK, thanks, Muraria, I think I get that I've got to (word a) them out in order to get a perfect 5 x 5 grid. All I need to understand now is the second instruction.

I think I have pretty much everthing understood, with the first 3 words of the instruction completed and all the NE answers entered.

My problem is though, that I follow the the last 4 words of the instruction literally, then, while it does leave me with 'a fragmented note', it also 'clears' the 2nd and 4th letter of all 3 NE down answers.

What am I misunderstanding?

Sorry, Ilippu, I don't get it. Do you mean the clues for Round 2?

Bren, the clearing of rows happens before attempting round 2. That’s what the preamble says. So you shouldn’t be clearing anything entered in round 2.
If I’m understanding you correctly.

I simply took it to mean that you follow the second part of the instruction i.e. leaving the cells in each alternate row blank, first before inserting the NE entries

The clues (three A, three D) are listed under the A, D headings in lower half of grid after clearing the alternate rows. The answers, to be entered in NE corner, are all 5-letter synonyms, whose unches make up LEAKY REASONS

No problem bren, it wasn''t totally clear (to say the least!)

Note that any actual solutions you may ‘clear’ do still need to be entered in the online entry form. So don’t forget them!
