Does it help parsing 25A to think of Nancy as the name of an Englishwoman rather than as a town in France?

And I too cannot parse 5D.

5d the first 2 words are the definition. The "check" is a chess abbreviation.

Quocunque, I do see what you mean. I rather wish “Nancy’s” wasn’t there at all. Then it works. Perhaps someone else can shed light

"posh Nancy's residence" would work?

Hmm, I was thinking that Chris, but even then it would need to be “Nancy residence, for example”

Hi

The Nancy referred to is Nancy Mitford who coined the terms 'U' and 'non U' for what was posh or acceptable in upper class society. So wording in clue is in right order.

Not a great crossword in my view as evidenced by so many 'I can't parse' in the comments. How we miss Araucaria.

Sorry to add to the confusion with the potter, we have since found the "equipment" under her little sister's bed.
I got back from a walk and seemed to suddenly be able to fill a lot it in, but still can't get 4d or 16a despite having all the crossers. I can't see any hints for those already but apologies if I've missed something.
Not really enjoyed this, but need to finish it now 2 left.
I think 11a is my COD.

The parsing for 4d is quite easy, but the definitio is a bit of a stretch.
In 14a, Hope is a person.

Abi, for a moment there, after Brendan’s comment about Ray Potter, I thought you might have bought your daughter the 1952 Millwall strip!
16a ‘Hope’ refers to an author
