Hi FemmeNoire,

I forgot to do a COD (I was too stressed by my DNF!) but 24a would definitely be a contender, along with 22d.

12a - If you wanted to look up an "unknown number" you might look in this - well, 20 years ago!!

Penny just dropped for 4d. Seems a but unfair that the construction of the clue is not really indicated - you just have to think of a diagnostic aid (yes a procedure) and observe that the order is as per 23d

Oh got 12a thanks Brendan. I was looking for something more mathematical. My 8d must have been wrong so need to have a rethink
I agree 22a also a very fine clue and satisfying to solve

Enjoyed this puzzle.
thanks all for comments.... as I had incorrect 13a/4d intersecting letter, but your threads unpicked it for me!

Can't really understand 16d... Any parsing hints? person in OT??

24d - do you think ?cockney expression for thinking?

Frsteve I think 16d is referring to a person in the OT who is first referring to 3d. The wordnis built up from three single letters followed by a two letter word

I agree with Mattrom at 7 that 24d is something used in typesetting rather than a Cockney expression. Pronounced differently it is a synonym of “clue”

Morning all,
I know I bang on about grids, but this is the same grid (54a) now three times in four weeks. Paul used it last week and Brendan used it three weeks ago. I’m not complaining though, it’s a favourite ;-)
Brendan, you’re right, 1d made an appearance (in part) in the Everyman 3862 just a few weeks back in October.
Liked the device repeated in 19d and 28a. And the 4d/23d cross reference.
I was also struggling with 24d but have it now thanks to Mattrom @7!
Enjoyed this one, quite a challenge.

In regard to tyoesetting, the word "was" is crucial.
