Thank you so much Nelson, I was going round in circles.

I've now got 1, 3 and 5 but am having difficulty finding the other two, even after all the hints! Trying to find fictional Dicken's places is proving a lot more problematic than I thought it would:-(

Thanks Nelson, I stupidly didn't think that it would be in Chambers so didn't bother looking - but of course it is!! Will I never learn 😡

Hi Brendan. Use the asterisk wild card in the chambers app... follow it with the letters that come after the grey square, up to the second L. That’s how I found it.

I’ve found 1,2 and 5. I’m still at a complete loss on 3 and 4 despite the hints on here. I’ve looked at the Unicode suggested but it brings up a very weird symbol. I’ve wracked my brain for how the equivalence symbol could work. I think I’m ready to give up now. At least I’ve discovered what GWIT means :-D Although that just reminded me that I was in Gwithian bay this time last year and would dearly like to be there again :-(

When you do learn - please pass the secret on to me! I repeat the same mistakes over and over. Not reading preamble properly, not looling carefully enough at all Chambers defs, etc etc and many etcs. Week after week.

Hi Merenz,

That is how I finally found it - I just didn't think to look before! I've got 1, 2, 4, and 5 (although I'm not totally convinced about the symbol in 4). For 4, if you put "charles" then "wha.. d and ay" and "song" in Google you should find it.

Hi Nelson,

If you look at the EV thread, last night I searched for ages for definitions relating to three clues, with no luck, then I posted the query on the EV thread and Mattrom gave me the answers - all three of which were in Chambers - I just can't explain how I didn't see them!!

Nelson & Brendan... we should probably write ourselves a list of prompts:

1) Read and re-read the preamble Then keep reading it, every 10 minutes

2) For words with multiple definitions, read them all thoroughly. No quick scanning. It’s probably wise to start at the bottom!

3) Always look at the etymology

4) Look up both the definition of the possible answer AND the definition of the word that led you to it.

5) Emerging messages frequently include words like ‘theme’ (don’t get stuck on ‘the’).

Feel free to add to this... I’m going to write them out and stick them in the front of Mrs B’s red book.
