I have, muraria - and I got reams of science! I need a little picture of it, or it's full name or something (as a term it's meaningless to me other than as short geometrical term... but I'm guessing).

Thanks for the nudges. Just found the 4th one as prompted by various previous posts but not happy that the entry has to be 2 characters whereas everything else resolves to being a single symbol - or am I missing something?

Well, I am none the wiser for all these hints. Does the symbol go at the beginning, middle or end of the 3-cell string? Or, someone can just email me the answer at byssoid-csf@yahoo.com and put me out of my #$%& misery. (Temporary email address so no concerns about posting it here!)

Thanks all for the hints on the middle square. I assume the connection is art here? I considered this before but rejected it because I missed the Caroline connection.

I'm still not sure how we're supposed to fill the fourth blank square. I'm guessing a punctuation mark and the dodgy equivalence sign.

I thought the overall idea for the puzzle was excellent, and items 1, 2 and 5 work nicely. The other two are, as others have said, somewhat GWITtish (in my view).
