For the middle Caroline construction I've opted for a symbol representing a three word unit that completes the name of something a Spanish monarch was involved in. I'm Ok with thematic entries 1, 2 and 5 as well but can't get anywhere on number 4 (which needs to occupy 8 cells by my reckoning). Any hints here most welcome.

Really enjoyed this one and didn't mind that the endgame has required plenty of lateral thinking since that makes the PDMs even more delicious!

I originally wondered about photography for the middle entry too, drxx, but felt the required symbol didn't seem to be in the same class as the others.

For 4th, it's a surname you're after, musically

Thanks for the nudge on entry 4, drxx: I'd realised some punctuation was needed, but just hadn't been able to fill it in.

Overall this was quite fun, but I agree that there was a tad too much GWIT.

...and thanks to all for the much better option for the centre - unfortunately, I haven't got a clue what the thing looks like.
