I am struggling to see the connection between the thematic words. I have the first statement but can’t work out the last nine letters for the second description.
Any gentle nudge would be much appreciated.

Unclued, if you look in particular at the extra words in 30 and 38, they have very few alternative misprints. 30 is particularly thematic and has something in common with 38 and all the others, of course.

Thanks Caphrist. I didn’t realise there were so many synonyms available. Presumably this now simply means that a significant letter is just repeated.

Hi unclued. There’s no significant letter repeated... that’s an errant path. Another extra word for which there are few (maybe just one?) possible letter change is 42a. The title also provides a cryptic representation of the overall theme

Yes. Sorry unclued, I realised that after posting and seeing caphrist’s response. This head cold is stymying my thinking!

I’m submitting the puzzles in an attempt to tick this off my mum’s bucket list (by proxy). She stopped submitting when it moved from the Listener to The Times... so it’s down to me now. I’d hoped for a better chance with the numbers puzzle (I’m guessing there are a fewer submissions?) but no joy this time. I’ll keep trying.

I submit a few- EV, IQ , Spectator and Mephisto- as family members and friends. They are often surprised to get a cheque or similar through the door. My 6 year old has won quite a few prizes!
