As I intimated earlier, if all that was required was to generate the 8 thematic words and highlight them the preamble could have been much more concise. The comment regarding how to process the erased letters, using some to replace letters in region A and finally highlighting the 8 appearances suggests applying the process to the whole area.

It is however very ambiguous and I don't think the misprint instructions are remotely helpful (especially the 2nd word). I fear this is another Golden Hare moment, with a likely similar level of intolerance if one goes 'the wrong way'.

S_pugh, my second word rhymes with the third and begins with H. Does that accord with yours? Do the pair make a meaningful phrase?

The preamble does say 'a hint' not an instruction.

That sounds the same Dryden, my 3rd starts with a corner of the country, and no it means nothing to me. I guess the 2nd word could hint at staying the same as in to harness or tether, and the 3rd hints at the opposite. Like I said earlier though, if the intention was simply to create the 8 entities and highlight them that preamble could have been a lot simpler and the misprints would have been unnecessary, which is why I'm inclined to agree with your reading of a more general change being required in region A in keeping with the 1st word, then applying word 2 and word 3 by turn. Sound reasonable?

I have ground to a halt with this one. I have most of the grid filled in apart from the middle four rows, which I can't seem to piece together. Does the 'stupid nonsense' clue give a word with 'oxi' in it or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Eo?e??. Have I entered some down clues in the wrong place?
Please forgive my ineptitude, I've never done a grid like this before.
