I think I have the quote that starts “hell is....” but I can’t see how the witch switch helps to transform anything. Also in what sense is it alternating? Thanks for any help to push me over the line (literally).

As far as I can make out, you have to change alternate letters in A to get the thematic characters. I have a 7 and 5 in row one, 8 in row 5, 9 in row 6, and 5 and 7 in row 7. I can see a 5 in row 2 starting at the 3rd letter, but I’m not sure it qualifies. I can also see an 8 in row 3 starting with the second letter, but it doesn’t correspond with the alternating bit. Some say there 2x9 and 2x8. Can anyone help?

Hi XIJ

In terms of the items to highlight
2 on Line 1
1 on line 2
1 on line 3
1 on line 5
1 on line 6
2 on line 7

You need to take alternate letters 2,4, 6 etc From the bottom row

Then 1,3,5 from the next row up

2,4, 6 etc. From the next row up

Etc. Etc.

And replace the letters in the corresponding rows in section A

Hope that is clear.

Thanks xij and dja. I’ll give that a go and see what happens. Which part of the grid is blank?

Meursault it’s a good one this week. Very original idea with tough clues.
Can anyone tell me the significance of “witch” in the misprints. Is a devil a witch?

Surely its DiTCH/SWITCH that describes what you have to do?

Woodlouse, you are probably right, since it makes more sense than my correction of H to give HITCH. However, I think the misprinted word is badly chosen since there are three plausible corrections, and DAM is the least likely because it's a very unusual alternative to DAMN.

I didn't waste much time over it since the first and third words of the hint were enough.
