Put in the first down answer down the first column. Then a bar after the A. Start rock bass from the next cell. Obviously at some point remove a letter so the word takes up 7 spaces.
The opposite happens along the last row namely 5 letters, 7 letters, unchecked cell.

Since the grid would be symmetric if you included the bars, you can infer that the first entry must occupy 7 cells (and hence lose a letter) because the last across entry has length 7. Since the 2nd and next-to-last across entries both have length 6, they either both lose a letter or both have a misprint. Same for the 3rd & 4th pairs. But the 5th pair has length 6/7 so the latter gets shortened; etc.

I do not think there will be complaints on AB that this one is too easy!

There are several things that make this a tough grid to fill. Firstly the clues are very clever, and some of the misprints are hard to spot even when you have the answer; secondly the omissions, and thirdly the large number of three-letter and four-letter entries in a carte blanche grid. The completed grid has a very low average entry length, far lower than is recommended in the Listener notes for setters. I found completing the last three rows particularly tough. Filling the grid took me around five hours, I reckon.
