Since the grid would be symmetric if you included the bars, you can infer that the first entry must occupy 7 cells (and hence lose a letter) because the last across entry has length 7. Since the 2nd and next-to-last across entries both have length 6, they either both lose a letter or both have a misprint. Same for the 3rd & 4th pairs. But the 5th pair has length 6/7 so the latter gets shortened; etc.
I do not think there will be complaints on AB that this one is too easy!
