Regarding Fred's age, I meant competitively young.

I also pronounce both words in 19d the same way, having grown up in Essex and moved to East London in my mid-twenties.

Fed's age, I meant - my phone uses predictive text and is forever gelding thongs wrong 😄

I often wonder about the age demographics of those interested in crosswords and whether there is a younger generation coming through.

Amongst the Clueless / Peer Review contributors on this forum we have one regular who is about to celebrate his 80th and another in his first year at University which is good to know!

Hi Jono, I referenced the age issue in @37 of the Listener 4923 thread.

It is the "we hear" that is the homophone indicator

I confess to being a bit mystified by the questioning of the homophone in 19D. If you look up both words on the Collins dictionary website, they are both shown as having the same pronunciation. You can also hear both words being pronounced (albeit with different voices) and I can't tell the difference. Surely if the dictionary says they sound the same, that should be accepted? We don't question dictionary definitions...

They are quite close, but surely the first vowel sounds are different?

The first vowels are sounded identically according to both Collins and Chambers.

And also the Oxford English Dictionary.

For all the discussion re 19d, I confess at 6.50 on Sunday morning I still don't know what the 'stock' reference refers to. I'm sure my answer is right for 'object' but maybe not.
