I've just written PET HATE into a crossword, and it reminded me.
Radio3 news this morning, about new pictures on banknotes:
"They will be of animals and birds"
Two nations divided by a common language. I've just heard the American golf commentator call Englishman Paul Waring (pronounced, of course, "wearing") as "Paul Warring".
Not an American thing, just a screw-up by one announcer. There is a company called Waring here (and maybe there) that makes small kitchen appliances; pronounced "wearing" by one and all, most memorably by Warren Zevon at about 1:10:
Why can't people read what they have written? This is from a BBC report on the Scotland-England Women's rugby match:
"What it has taken to get to this stage for the Scotland players cannot be understated,"
The writer means "overstated"!
