Re the theme, there is one that only UK solvers of a certain age will get (it's the name of the ????? in TMR), but it did make me laugh:-)

There are also some semi-thematic paired solutions like (1d, 6a) and (1d, 19).

Hi Ilippu,

Re 7d, I had a similar problem in that the wordplay can lead to 2 answers, with 2 different "notes up", and I only got which one to use after I solved 9a.

I've got 12 thematics so far but some are more descriptive than types of, if you see what I mean.

Hi Brendan,

7d my problem was the last two letters.....

Three pairs are possible, but I did not see the third pair helping with the musical soon enough. The other two pairs messed with 19a serously.

Charlie Parker misdirection...plus Brockwell's music related clues keep me on my toes, as I don't have much knowledge...

Okay, thanks Ilippu, I misunderstood what you meant. I read it that the last 5 letters are a "musical" reversed/"up" and they go beneath 2 "notes" that are also "up".

Regards the theme, I think Broickwell is casting his net wide. For example, one of the works by16a is The 'theme'.

Good fun, and a fairly quick fill. 1d was also my FOI followed by 6a which alerted me to a possible theme and as I am “a solver of a certain age” (thanks Brendan) that solution also jumped out.

Am I correct in thinking that Kate Spade (who I had to look up) is fulfilling the same purpose as Sesame Street?

Hi Jono,

Regards 4d - Yes, that's how I read it. Chambers specifies that the answer is a N American word for "purse".
