I went to the Prospect of Whitby a couple of times when I lived on Denmark Hill. I'm a long way away now, though!

The Prospect of Whitby ship was a Tyne collier that docked near the tavern in Wapping, London, giving the pub its name. This ship carried coal from Newcastle upon Tyne to London and was so well-known that the pub became known as "the pub near the Prospect of Whitby" before being officially named after it.

The pub, originally known as “The Pelicanl and later "The Devil's Tavern" due to its criminal clientele (!), was renamed The Prospect of Whitby in the 18th century after the ship.

My Cockney friend here (just phoned to invite me out for an early libation; badly needed after the weekend I’ve had with my other English friend) tells me it was once frequented by 'diamond geezers'.
