What a marathon! More like a decathlon, I suppose.

Well worth staying the course. A mind-blowing construction. Many thanks, 'Eck.

You just beat me to it! I was convinced their Latin was off, but I digged a little deeper and discovered that it was just my ignorance.

This setter knows more than I do about almost everything, I suspect, so the ancient languages are of course properly rendered.

I'll have to look up the original of the quotation when I'm next in the UK. It's a while since I've visited that particular place.

Kindred2,
You may have worked it out by now, but in 1d, def. is 'winners outside' with a misprint. The singular version of the answer would be (3-1-1)
In the other, def is 'cheap', with a misprint.

A day at the seaside has given some welcome time off from this trial, but wheels must have been turning while I was away. I have worked out what the first five words from the misprints mean, and have discovered nine words. Do they have any relevance, or is it enough merely to have noted that they exist. The rest of that message is clear enough, but carrying it out remains anything but. I assume that the letters and numbers in the printed grid are meant to be useful, but I can’t see a way of cracking the way in. Are there hints which might light the way, or at least the first few steps?

Got there in the end - what an amazing construction. The most complex for at least the 30 years I've been solving Listeners! Thanks 'Eck.

Completed - a satisfying resolution. Many, many delightful moments along the way, but, my word, was the way hard-going. Thrilled to be released and able to think of something else for the remainder of my week.

Great job 'Eck.

Not sure I'll get to the end of this as that preamble still feels pretty impenetrable even after a full grid and discovering the 'objects name'
In the meantime could somebody please help with the parsing of NY loads and give a nudge to the misprint. I'd be very grateful

After a busy weekend I've also got as far as a full grid. Determined to get into the endgame now - a real toughy, but it seems like it'll be well worth the perseverance!

As far as that clue goes, mullingar, I believe first two words are the def, and it's a clue with words removed not a misprint!

Lewap, thanks for your post at 41. This has given me a foothold in the North West corner of the grid.
