Help with the theme may also be sought here. If assisting, aim to give just a nudge, a pointer in the right direction. Avoid anything that would spoil the puzzle for others.

38 clues solved and it's time for bed. No idea what on earth is going on.

I too have exactly 38 clues solved and no idea what's going on!

Am I correct in thinking that the word lengths refer to the answers, and not the space available in the grid?

Time for me to throw in the towel!
After 4 & 1/2 hours I have managed to solve a mightily unimpressive 8 clues (7a and 1d) and have a VERY tentative grid arrangement for the across answers. Far too difficult for me, and my mighty admiration to anyone who fills the grid, never mind completes the crossword.

Likewise Gitto. I’ve crawled up to 13 answers but trying to put them in the grid is proving fruitless

Gitto and Rickye, I am with you. Eight clues solved, none entered and no idea where to go from here.
