According to Google "The (8,6) in The Times is a weekly entertainment section featuring reviews and previews of films, music, theatre, live music, ballet, opera, exhibitions, and a TV column by Caitlin Moran. It also includes travel features, particularly focusing on London." If the 8,6 is the one in the ninth special clue it seems excessively hard on solvers who don't live within 3000 miles of either London (that's not our one in Ontario) or a copy of The Times. But maybe it's a different 8,6. Should I bother carrying on? A pity as I must have spent 10+ moderately satisfying hours on the thing.

I don’t think it’s a crazy assumption that most people solving the Listener from the Saturday Times has a copy of the Saturday Times

If not, googling the objects in that context may help

I have an on-line account, which I keep up mainly for the Listener Crossword. Unfortunately the on-line version of The Times doesn't have an (8,6) section! But I found the objects in question in a fairly obvious place.

So I have the 9-word list of instructions, and have managed to follow the first two, giving a very recognisable picture. But now I'm completely stuck! What is the 7th word? And what are we supposed to do with it? Please don't answer, at least not yet -- I'm still hoping for inspiration.

This would get an E grade in the Magpie.

Tonyg,

I'm at a similar point. Your 7th word describes something in (8,6). So I suppose we have to solve that. Not sure how to use the 8th and 9th word, though!

|'ve spent a most enjoyable two days filling the grid only to find despite having what I think is the message from the 39 misprints I have no idea what is going on. I had the same problem two weeks ago but the grid fill was much easier. I think I'll have to give in but I am pleased I have been able to fill the grid even if I cannot complete the puzzle. Well done those that can cross the finish line

@m99: Yes of course, how stupid of me. I'll get to work on it! As for the final clue: did you notice something that all the referenced items have in comon in the altered grid?

Well, I have made more progress than I ever thought I would...

Nudges for the wordplay for 1dn (Arab relatives.. ) (I know the misprint), Cheap singer... and Bertie would be very much appreciated before I try to launch myself into the end game (or at least, the next part... )

kindred2, I don't think i'm giving too much away to say that 'Bertie' has a misprinted letter.

OMG it gets deeper! This is fun! And I know there's yet another level after this, because one of the letters hasn't been used yet.

Tonyg,

I have a solution that uses everything it should. I can't yet see an adapted quotation, and not sure about the 8th and 9th words. Time for a sleep...
