I have completed the puzzle referred to in the first set of instructions, which has given me a second set. Carrying out the first part (7 words) seems straightforward, although I can't see yet what it leads to. Carrying out the second part (2 words) is problematic because of the duplication of the letters/numbers. Do I resolve this by trial and error, or is there a more logical way of doing it?

If you erase all but the indicated cells (not the entire entries) you should have two side by side puzzles to solve

Candledave, I have the two side by side puzzle grids, but some of the cells are occupied by the letters which have not been erased, whereas it is numbers which are required. Also, the same letters/numbers repeat which is not allowable. For example, column 1 includes the same number three times. Clearly, I am not understanding something fairly basic, but I cannot see it.

0pt0: you should have a ten-word instruction the start of which tells you which letters to keep, including one word which distinguishes these two side-by-side puzzles from the usual ones of their kind.

It is a letter version of the puzzle rather than a number one using 9 different letters in each

Thanks Throck and Candledave. My reading of the instruction gives me words of length 5, 7, 5, 6, 7, 3, 3, 3, 5 and 3. This has not helped me, but it would be nice to know whether this order is correct. The relevant words could be arranged in several ways, with different meanings.

The words should be read in grid order - across then down

If you find a natural order for the ten words to be taken in then they should read to make sense. They'll form a first instruction (five words), which sets you up (I used a fresh grid at this point!), a second instruction (three words, and the 6 word in particular should clarify how these will work), and a third instruction (two words) to be done when you've finished solving -- this yields your third set of instructions, for which I used yet another fresh grid (which I sent in!).
