The clues...
Requests for help should normally include the clue itself, the number of letters in the answer, and details of any you already have. Any additional information or special instructions, common in Listener puzzles, should also be included.
Hints only, please, no answers.

The theme...
Help with the theme may also be sought here. The help should be gentle in nature - just a nudge, a pointer in the right direction (and definitely not anything that would spoil the puzzle for others).

Unsolicited help, with answers or with the theme, will be removed.

The Listener is a unique puzzle and should be treated with respect.

A fairly easy gridfill but that is where the hard work starts.

I'm going to take a few photocopies to draw what I hope will eventually be what is required. At the moment I can't see the need for the pretty picture, although I know what is going on. And, as so often, a new fact is learnt.

Very clever, and not all that difficult with careful path-following. The note about avoiding doubts is helpful.

Finished the grid fill and what the extra words lead to - my major problem is not understanding the preamble!!

Yes, take care with the path fill! My first effort was gobbledygook.

A clever application of the theme. My heart sank when I saw the compass, but it's all very fair and less complex than it first appears.

Thanks, Pandiculator!

I am very much in awe of you guys who have solved this already. I have managed to fill the grid, although I have not been able to parse 36 down. It would be nice to get this out of the way before tackling the end-game.

You might profitably look up "cipher".
