I can't see any indication of whether we should draw the curly bits from the top down or the bottom up. Logic would suggest the former, as that's how we write, but some seem to be highly ambiguous - eg one oriented roughly NE/SW.

For what little it’s worth, I went with completing the central cell and highlighting. Illustrating the paths could produce a complete guddle. Also, I jaloused the end results without actually completing either of the paths - the messages gave me enough to put together a reasonable solution. But, of course, that may just mean I went horribly agley!

I would suggest that one just follow the path mentally with a small mark on each visited cell to prevent reusing a cell.

Cockie - if you check the "compass" in the preamble you'll see that a line going, for example, NE has curves that are a mirror reflection of a line going SW. I confess never figured out what the last sentence of the preamble meant though

cruncher - the last (but one) sentence is there because the writer sometimes makes it difficult to see whether a symbol is clearly oriented in a particular direction. It's to make it clear whether the symbol is in a cardinal or non-cardinal direction. Still doesn't help me with whether, for example, the first symbol goes up or down. Down probably, but it isn't clear.

I'm tearing my hair out!! Could someone tell me which answer contains the 13th letter of the first instruction? The 12 directions of the path I currently have seem to fit perfectly with the "note to X" and with the extra words in the clues, but then it fails.

gitto - have you remembered that you don’t use letters twice in the message?

As candledave says. And to clarify, even though you ignore the letter, you still count it as a move. So if it was 3 east and landed on a previously used letter, you don’t move a further 3 east, but go on to the next in sequence
