Please help me in parsing/ solving this cryptic clue -
"Called for youngster to deliver some food, essentially (7)"

I think it might be protein. Called indicates a homophone, then “pro” is for, and “tein” sounds like teen, youngster, the definition being “some food, essentially”

Looks good to me, Quisling.

Bharat, as a tip, never overlook “for”. If it wasn’t needed as wordplay then it wouldn’t be there!

Thanks quisling for the nice parsing. Difficult one for me as I was looking at a wrong word "called for" as definition,

Thanks jono for the tip. In fact, I was thinking Pro for 'for', but could not parse it furhter, as I felt 'called' is the definition. Still learning.

Quisling, Bharat, anyone. I don't like this clue very much - only because the 'called', sounds like, doesn't relate at all to the next word, but the one after. Pro, for, is fine, of course - but putting 'called' in front of that means I found it on the clunky side.

Malone, I agree. I think “In favour of so-called youngster delivering food, essentially” would have read better, because pro is not part of the homophone. That’s if I even have the right answer!
