I was thinking in the same line, but was not sure whether N can be used for AND in crossword. Never have I ever come across this substitution in crosswords even though this substitution is used in advertising boards. DIG for an archeologist sounds okay as you have rightly pointed out and may not be for architect. Thanks for your guidance.
