Thank you all, but sadly that didn't solve any other clues. I have crossers N and C in 6d, is this right - I can't think of any appropriate dance!

The definition in 6 is an item of clothing. The (partial) dance is in the wordplay.

Can't parse 17a for the life of me.

The numbering of the thread does seem to have gone awry. The first post as I see it is now reads 0.

17a the two outside letters are an abbreviation for ‘namely’. Then in the middle you have a reversal for team (a Roman numeral) and a word for support.

Before I vow never to use this site again due to the persistent and intrusive ads, can I ask for hints on 18a and 7d. I have answers for both but can't see the repelled couple and 7 I have nothing but the answer which may of course be wrong. The other answers I've been stuck on for ages I didn't know the words or phrases at all. Which is where I suspect I'm at with 5a.

I took ages to see 7, but it's a simple reversed hidden.
18 definition is just "couple". Indefinite article, then the write, reversed.
