Finally finished this fantastic puzzle. A wonderful construction and surely a contender for POTY. Thanks Arcadia.

I simply can't leave this without comment - and this is the best place to register thoughts.

I feel like I have just solved the Enigma code and sorted out Linear B without leaving my seat - and in less than a week (just).
If this doesn't win POTY then I can't imagine what will.
The icing on the cake was, when I had finally resolved the reason for the celebrated 10, then to unearth 2 more references to characters associated with 2 of the locations. Just a lovely flourish at the end.

Any hints on 20, 25, 26?
Everyone else seems to have managed these easily!

I’m still plodding through! Bit too much of a slog this one I think…


20 bustle + fails to resolve - extra letter = pueblo housing (slightly oblique definition I think)

25 definition is all, common two word phrase

26 last four words are definition. “Of” is important for wordplay, not just a link word. Just read the wordplay literally!

I found that I had got 25 a while ago without realising it!
(I really made hard work of 26.)
All done now apart from parsing 28 (I have the answer and know the replacement).

Lawless is an anagram indicator. God signifies just one letter.

Do you have the parsing for 23?

And 26 took me ages too!

Aha! I'd been trying the anagram, but I didn't twig the one-letter abbreviation. But the two-letter insertion (if I'm understanding things) isn't in my dictionary---though I found it on Google (reliable?).

Here's my shot at 23:
1st word is def'n (body part); attention is 3 letters (as in `caught my ...'); flyer is aviator (5 letters) minus L (for latitude) and minus the extra letter.
Phew.

Please ignore my comment on the two-letter insertion in 28.
