Ok didn't think for too long before using the solver for 1A, would never have got that. My mum had a small electric one of those you put under the grill in the 70s or 80s, wasn't used much.

Then I got 1D no probs.

Cheers.

Thanks for the parsing of 9A first word in this thread... never heard of that expression for London before. Seemed to be the only thing that fitted though and the 2nd word made sense.

I can't see the spike in 13A, is it the first letter + the last 3?

7D was my favourite clue today. Took ages to get it though.

Ok, not heard of that word before either, and it was not in Chambers online either, but google knows about it, dunno why I didn't just search there for it earlier.

Cheers, think I have everything parsed now.

My mistake, it is in Chambers online, must have been beer o'clock when I tried to look it up ;)

Chris
When we visited in 2010 the kitchen was working fully with a porcine creature on the ****. Since then I think they have cleared soot from the back etc. and the old red brickwork has been exposed.
The kitchen was unbearably hot, so maybe they no longer use the **** for safety reasons. I will have to check. I have photos from 2010

Oh, it must have been the 1970s when I was there, jazzy! We moved out of London in 1981/2. (Never regretted it!)
