Grunger, it was absolutely fine - I'd done the clues that involved 'spinner' and 'bat', and they'd been so straightforward I hadn't registered any cricketing link. The awful 'Cockney' stuff and the sometimes non-homophones often jump out at me, but many sporting references pass unnoticed.

Mathprofrockstar, I agree - a true horror! Here it is for all to share...

Reportedly, imperfection in lower surface (5).

Malone

I think Grunger was also referring to the "Outswinger" clue, as was I.

Grunger

Apologies for the typo.

Thanks, Jigjag - I must have missed that one (perhaps my brain filtered it out?).

mathpro, malone

It works for me, but I know it doesnt for most people, so a poor clue

Thanks, Grunger. I can - just about - tolerate homophones when they work for most people, but I didn't feel this one one fitted into that category.

Speaking of categories, here's another contendor in the 'most over-used and most detested' stakes. It's from today's Times, so I won't mention the answer....

21 D. Socialite with appeal making entry on left side (5).

For this answer, I disliked both parts - the 'socialite' is pretty time-worn, the other part is even more so.

Malone, yes I agree those are hackneyed and overused, however, as an (ex) accountant I approve of the definition

Thanks, Jono. I'm relieved that someone else shares my feeling of jadedness with those crossword bits. Yes, the definition was fine - the only thing that was!

Yes an awful clue. I learned in book-keeping that the answer (side) was nearer the window, which seems to be a bit of a joke amongst accountants, book-keepers etc.

So I agree with you. I like the definition, but the "girl" has not been heard in my lifetime, nor the appeal, except in crosswords.
