I was thinking: White to move, kings, peon (which I knew was a pawn - we learned the names of the pieces in a Spanish lesson. I liked Alfil, which reminds me of Anfield).

I missed the check and variations - so there were actually 5 ( though you are right, not in a chess contest). Whenever I see Bishop, king queen etc, I think of chess first.

Clever clue. Part of the solution, elephant, is a piece (per clue), being the name for the bishop in Spanish and Russian, if I remember correctly.

I've just seen an advert for Booking.com (about whom I've seen some complaints recently - particularly one family who had booked a holiday in Cornwall and weren't recognised when they arrived; booking.com rearranged their holiday to Uxbridge!). The backing track was Fleetwood Mac - would you believe "Tell me lies"....

I cant think of anything worse than a holiday in Uxbridge. I suppose it would not take as long to get there though.

Part of a crossword clue today:

One with no religion. Answer: pagan.

But is paganism a religion? It is sometimes defined as a religion that is not recognized. A grey area, I think.

I was taught at school that any non-Christian was a pagan
