Thanks, Tyke51. I liked (as in 'enjoyed getting irritated by') 'hostilism'. My mother used to occasionally make up words, but she knew she was doing it.

Hi Malone, my parents always enjoyed wordplay which they encouraged us `kids` to share - my first memory of crosswords was being allowed to fill in the squares in the SE Skeleton - woe betide me if I messed up!

Tyke51, what brave parents, trusting their children to fill in the crossword squares! I know you were being supervised, but even so...

I always played lots of word games with my children, but that was mainly so that I could avoid lots of other activities - all the creative stuff such as Playdough, painting, drawing, Lego....

Latest 'howler' from a report in our local newspaper, concerning a young lady who had written a book

Apparently said writing caused her fiance so much frustration, that he insisted that her wedding vowels include a promise never to write another

"'Ey, I owe you!" . . perhaps?

Heard yet again from a quiz show contestant introducing himself: 'I was originally born in....' That begs the question as to where they were subsequently born.

Mmm, alwayspuzzled - check what "begs the question" actually means!

I checked, with no less an authority than "Grammar Girl" . .

As I did so, I couldn't help but notice the title of another of her informative articles: "How Do Words Get In The Dictionary?"
