Grunger, the answer is BESTOW. Someone elsewhere suggested that the editor tampered with it, not realizing that there was a theme running throughout.

Here's a riddle suggested to me by a clue today (probably not original):

Q When is a woman a man?

A When she is the queen in a game of chess.

Looks as though we`ve been terminated - it`s been a lot of fun fellow pedants/pedantesses !

Tyke51, I haven't seen any mention of Pedants being terminated (ouch!). I know Norah feels the PCT/Personal Chatty Threads has got a bit long, unwieldy, so started The Café. As a true pedant, I will keep my beady eye on this one...

I agree that a queen is a man in chess. I have also known women who insist on being called postman, draughtsman, chairman etc. rather than ridiculous attmepts to call them something else.

It is very kind of you to say that. Certainly Malone and I will continue to contribute but a couple of regulars are under the impression that the thread is banned. I am hoping they will be persuaded to continue.

I am sorry but I quit without looking at this thread which I cannot explain. Thanks for the hint but I didnt solve it. I never think of BEST in that sense. This has been such a successful thread that I was amazed that it was banned but if it continues I will be back. I have enjoyed your observations and stories so much. I was pleased that there was a pie clue in the Times yesterday.
