Today's Telegraph cryptic included all the chess pieces as answers, except for bishop. And yet 1d is B?S?O? so it could easily have gone there. I don't know what the setter was thinking. Perhaps he doesn't like religion.

I know it's not, grunger, because I do it online and it tells me if I'm right. The clue is:

Confer and trounce old women (6)

Grunger - 'trounce' leads to a four-letter verb, followed by some abbreviating.... The 'confer' doesn't mean 'discuss'.

Grunger, the answer is BESTOW. Someone elsewhere suggested that the editor tampered with it, not realizing that there was a theme running throughout.

Here's a riddle suggested to me by a clue today (probably not original):

Q When is a woman a man?

A When she is the queen in a game of chess.

Tyke51, I haven't seen any mention of Pedants being terminated (ouch!). I know Norah feels the PCT/Personal Chatty Threads has got a bit long, unwieldy, so started The Café. As a true pedant, I will keep my beady eye on this one...

Yes we must carry on, without Grunger unfortunately. I will miss her humorous contributions.

I agree that a queen is a man in chess. I have also known women who insist on being called postman, draughtsman, chairman etc. rather than ridiculous attmepts to call them something else.
