Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I suppose ill must befall some of the animals involved - especially if taken to the front with the owners - but were they allowed to do that?
I think I might put the book on my list "to order" though.......I am collecting titles for Amazon at the moment.
I shall look it up tomorrow - if I can find a copy for 1p as you did, then I shall order it.
So far, I only have two books on my list! although I am still awaiting two others to arrive from Amazon.
Yes, the osprey chicks are very big now...shouldn't they be attempting flight soon?
I was reading the blog when I came across a photo of a great crested grebe with her chicks........ both were sitting on mum's back whilst she swam in the loch!
Really cute - do take a look!

Yes, Zozozo, "Disabled" was very distressing.
I can only remember fragments.........

"He sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark"

"In the old times, before he threw away his knees".

"How cold and late it is! Why don't they come
And put him into bed? Why don't they come?"

Hello, Elle!
No, I do not think you should get it.
I think it will upset you.
Would there be many horses coming back from France?
Read the Amazon reviews.
I think it covers over 60 species.
Butterflies, cats, etc.
There are several copies at a penny.
The chicks leave for Africa in August.
So they have learn to fly and catch fish before then.
They won't come back for at least two years, though Lassie and Laddie will return next year, all being well.
I saw the grebe, and young grebes.

Rusty, I know you don't do the Times Jumbo Cryptic, but I thought I'd share this clue with you - and any other interested parties.

50 A. Overheard wine-drinker's declared preference for area of UK (4,2,5).

Thank you zozozo, never read "Disabled" before.

We had to take the bus to get to the lacrosse field when I was at school. In order not to have to run about too much and to keep out of the way of the murderous crosses, i elected to play in goal (a really stupid idea). Behind the pitch at my end was a Home for Disabled Servicemen. Some of them must have been from WW2, but my memory is of a row of wheelchairs, almost all housing old men with no legs. Some were smoking using a kind of swing arm they could move with what was left of an arm. Some seemed blind as well. I hope they got a little pleasure from watching us.

Even though I was a thoughtless teenager, this sight summed up for me the pity of war and I have (clearly) never forgotten it.

I may have mentioned this before, sorry

Hoping for an answer to that clue sometime, malone!

Rosalind, your experience sounds painfully sad, but also uplifting in a way - it made the teenage you confront something that you might otherwise never have seen for yourself.

As my clue is from today's paper, I feel I shouldn't give the answer too soon - I don't want to spoil other people's solving.

Hello, Malone!
No, the Times cryptic is enough for me nowadays, but....
May I hazard a guess at Isle of Wight?
If so, not too bad a clue.
Though Wight and White sound different to me.
