Yes, Rusty, Isle of Wight it is. I thought it was ' I'll've white ', (I'll have white) for the 'preference' but that's maybe a bit clunky!

Yes, that could be it, Malone.
Not a bad clue, though.
It is several years since I have done the Jumbo.
I even have two Times Jumbo Cryptic Crossword books.

I absolutely agree, malone. It was good for me to have experienced but soooooo sad for those men.
As I think we probably all know, there is plenty of leaving people without food and in the cold these days, too. Once, visiting my father in hospital, a frail old man called out to me to help. He said he had been forced to get out of bed but his legs were very cold. All that was needed was to put a bed cover round him. Visiting my mother I saw a lady who had gone blind overnight from a brain tumour unable to eat her dinner because the plate was out of reach and of course she could not see it. She told me she had missed many meals and drinks.

I tried to volunteer at my local hospital to help such people but was told I couldn't have a staff car parking permit , even just for those hours. That would have meant an hour's journey each way instead of 10 minutes, the same amount of petrol and a £2 car park charge. Or a much larger charge to park in the patient's car park.

Good morning, Rusty!
Another beautiful day here! but a little cooler and fresher - which I like!
Umm, after what you said, I am having second thoughts about reading "Tommy's Ark"....I should enjoy the relationships between "pets" and soldiers, but not the perhaps inevitable outcome.
Maybe I will put the idea on hold, and see what you think of the book when you have received your copy?
I hope that there will be a lot tennis at Wimbledon today! (and no rain)
They are now going to play matches on Sunday in an effort to catch up with the schedule.
The main match of interest today (to me anyway) will be the continuation of the Novak Djokovic match against Sam Querry. Novak has some task before him......
Nick Kyrgios plays again today.
But if you are planning to watch Le Tour - what time does that start? - you will not have much time for tennis!

Zozozo and Busby, thank you for that...it is some time since I read "Disabled " all through!

Malone, I would have gone with "I love white" as sounding like "Isle of Wight"? (although I would have hoped for better diction!)

Hi, Ros!
I has to smile at your opting for goal, when playing lacrosse, so you didn't have to run about........I chose to play defence (Cover point) for much the same reason!!

Good morning, Elle!
Le Tour will be on TV after 11. ITV4 and Eurosport.
Stage finishes at Utah Beach.
That's interesting! Could there be an American winner?
Ell, I think one Amazon reviewer said she found the book very sad, because of the fate of the creatures.
But, I'll try it.
The three books I have of Richard van Emden's are very good, so fingers crossed!
Yes, Sunday Wimbledon.
What is the weather like today?
Cloudy here, and not warm!

Hi, Rusty!
I am hoping that Roger will win Wimbledon! but not by means of Novak going out at this stage!
I don't know what is happening at Wimbledon weather wise - I haven't had chance to look at the television......we are going out at 12 pm to our daughters.
It is the Summer Fair at BB's prospective new primary school, so we are all going to add support to the venture.
I hope you enjoy viewing Le Tour....it should be interesting to see Utah Beach; I wonder if there will be a history lesson included?
Catch up with you later.........
P.S. I shall miss Novak's match!

Hello, Elle,
Le Tour has just left Mont-Saint-Michel.
It is just an amazing looking place.
Like something out of Disney.
A history lesson on Utah Beach would do me no harm.
I just know a little bit about it.
I think Omaha beach is just along the coast from it, according to my Tour map.

Hi Rusty,

That's it ! They are on the way. Apart from a bit of history (perhaps) today, I will only get really interested in the race around mid-week, when they are on the edge of the Massif Central.

You are right, the two beaches are not very far from each other.
I remember touring around the landing beaches with my husband one year, on our way back to Guernsey. We stopped for a drink and a sandwich in a cafe at Sainte-Mere-L'Eglise; well, when the owner and other locals understood that my husband was of American nationality, we never managed to pay for anything, and it took a fair while before they allowed us to leave - We did not want to upset them, so went about it very gently; luckily we were not in any hurry.

Hello, Pigale!
Yes, Le Tour is on it's way!
Enormous crowds out for it, and the weather has brightened.
That is a lovely story about Sainte-Mere-L'Eglise.
You have good memories of your visit.
The name rings a bell with me, yet I am not sure why.
I must have read something about it years ago.
I know more about the Great War!

Hi Rusty,

It was in Sainte Mere L'Eglise that a US paratrooper, John Steele, landed on the Church Spire and pretended to be dead for two hours, before the Germans eventually noticed him and made him prisoner. (I think he escaped later) - He was portrayed in film 'The Longest Day'.

Sainte Mere played an important part during the landings because of its location.
