@ meursault
It is actually quite appropriate, as the subject of the puzzle died 100 years ago last Thursday, on his way to Gallipoli. [And, though we think of that campaign as involving Anzac, twice as many died there from Britain (and as many from France).]

But I have 25a beginning with R, when it should be K for the name to work.

I can find only 26 letters to highlight. A four letter going down, a five letter going across, an eleven letter diagonal and a six letter name. Where else should I look?

Hi patch49, the 11 letter diagonal and 6 letter name (the 2nd & 3rd "items" to be highlighted) share a common square so total 16. The 1st "item" is literally where it can be found.

1st bear = Rupert, 2nd bear = brook + bearing E.

The title is a reference to the person's name - the first word of the name is a Bear, the second word (minus the last letter) also means Bear and the E is a Bearing/direction.

I can't remember the exact title, so this was done from memory. Hope it makes sense!
