In 26a, one word in the clue is redundant.

For 26 ac I think the word 'round ' is superfluous.

In crossword terms it would indicate that 'Boatman' went round 'answe'r - which is not how the answer works (as I have it). So take round out and it works as a straight clue.

That's what I thought all along, but several people here seem to think there are NO exceptions!
A propos: where's the theme word in 1a? Surely not the answer THEN the theme word? I'm still puzzled!

Thanx, both of you. That's another one cleared up then! Still wondering about 1a for instance...................

1a contd: Ixion suggested long ago that "shows" might be redundant, but I don't see the connection to the theme. Does anyone else?

No, I can't find the theme in 1ac, but then there are still a few I'm not entirely happy with. The parsing of 4ac for instance.

It could be show, as a type of ring, ie show-ring. That's how 23dn seems to work. I
take the point about 26ac.

And "leader" in 5dn is ignored for the same reason.

My (hopefully) final worry concerns 3d: can ANYONE offer an explanation here concerning "themed" or "not themed" ?
